Abstract

ROVEDA HOYOS, ANTONIO. Local Identities, Languages, and the Media: Exploration, Logic, and Tension. Signo pensam. [online]. 2008, vol.27, n.53, pp.59-67. ISSN 0120-4823.

The continuous construction and deconstruction of identities has been a constitutive characteristic of the late 20th century and on into the 21st. Political, economic, and socio-cultural factors, plus the intricacies of the use and consumption of goods, permanently affect and nurture the essential categories which in turn constitute both social and personal identities by establishing notions such as time, space, body, movement, and territory/locality. The plot becomes even more complex if we consider that these identities (collective or individual) are exposed today to different narratives, images, media, messages, and technologies in an ongoing process that permanently reshapes and, at the same time, challenges their values and cosmogonies. Finally, the paper leads the reader to reflect on the different tensions and the logic behind the circulation of symbolic production used by mass media as opposed to the local logic and dynamics used by communities in search of their own identity traits.

Keywords : Identity; otherness; fragmentation; aesthetics, and consumption.
