This paper attempts to answer the question: What does Colombian society expect from a foreign language teacher today? The question is made in the midst of UNESCO's declaration of 20o8 as the International Year Languages. We deal with the expectations (and demands) which different sectors of society might have from the foreign language teacher and we try to answer from the teacher's perspective based on one main concept: "critical awareness".
