This paper describes an interdisciplinary experience on the conception and development of a digital repository for historical research about media in southwestern Colombia. It takes stock of social research-oriented repositories in the world, Latin America and Colombia. This paper traces the beginnings of what has made possible to convert a database of restricted use into an open access repository for research development. It also develops a comparative analysis between the experiences of the creation of university institutional repositories in the Netherlands, Venezuela, the United States and Colombia. Finally, this paper will discuss the most sensitive issues that underpin the creation of repositories for the historiography of methods and processes of communication.
