Abstract

SOLER CASTILLO, Sandra. Representations of Academic Writing in Bilingual and Intercultural Contexts. Signo pensam. [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.62, pp.64-80. ISSN 0120-4823.

This paper presents research results of the macroproject Academic writing in contexts of bilingualism and multiculturalism. We analyze the case of Universidad Distrital and, in particular, we describe and interpret the social representations of indigenous and black students on academic writing. The article proposes, from a critical discourse analysis, a discussion of writing as a form of academic exclusion since these students are disadvantaged, either by problems of adaptation to the city, attachment to the cultural traditions in which the oral tradition plays a key role, or because of academic practices of the university, such as the development of written texts. We conclude by proposing the need for a change in education practices towards the recognition of different ways of being, knowing and doing.

Keywords : Social Representations; Academic Writing; Power; Bilingualism; Multiculturalism; Bilingualism; Intercultural Communication; Discourse Analysis; Narrative; Social Exclusion.
