Abstract

LINNE, Joaquín. After the expansion of home internet: adolescents from popular sectors and cibers in the City of Buenos Aires. Signo pensam. [online]. 2014, vol.33, n.65, pp.70-83. ISSN 0120-4823.  https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.SYP33-65.dmih.

This research explores the situation of Internet cafes in the city of Buenos Aires and its major population, adolescents from popular sectors. Although in recent years millions of teenagers abandoned these spaces as a result of the expansion of home Internet, many teenagers from popular sectors continue to go for communicative recreation, information and social integration. The methodology used consists of 40 in-depth interviews, participant observations and content analysis of Facebook profiles (n = 200). Results highlight that the main practices of these teenagers are communicative and that these spaces are used as tools for digital literacy, peer sociability and citizenship inclusion.
