Abstract
DIEZ ECHAVARRIA, Maritza. Disability as personal election A manner to overcome and trascend disability. Invest. educ. enferm [online]. 2005, vol.23, n.1, pp.120-124. ISSN 0120-5307.
There is in our social milieu marked resistence to accept any class of disability weather physical, sensorial or intelectual. Persons afflicted by disabilities are considered nonentities, useless or invalid persons. In such a way disability becomes synonymous with weakness, lack of security and total helplessness and a sense of pity develops towards ourselves and other afflicted people. In this article my purpose is to demostrate that disability is a personal election and that as disabled and handicapped people we have the capacity to teach persons in the same conditions, and to the whole world, that we are superior to our external appearance since we are ordinary human beings, despite of our difference. “Normal” or “complete” persons can as well suffer unfulfillment, dissatisfaction or functional differences leading to various emotional and spiritual difficulties to relate with other people. In my personal case disability has opened me to a different world that has been an element of personal and spiritual transformation.
