LLAPA RODRIGUEZ, Eliana Ofelia; ECHEVARRIA GUANILO, María Elena; MAGNANI FERNANDES, Luciana  e  CANDUNDO, Guedes. Computer science in nursing as a resource of communication and help in the practice of nursing. Invest. educ. enferm [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.2, suppl.1, pp.144-149. ISSN 0120-5307.

Nowadays the introduction of technologies like databases hardware, software and internet systems are being adapted in the health systems. Those resources arrived in Brazil on the 80s and since they have more diversified. Our objective is to reflect about the introduction of computer science and its use in the practice of nursing. Now the use of modern portable systems is available in many hospitals and clinics allowing the use of information in any time or place. The nurses use the computers mainly in administration caretaking of patients, education and research. The professionals of health and the society should consider the role of the computer as communicational facilitator and also as a tool to improve efficiency in the care of patients. Despite that there is much discussion about the possibility of dehumanization in the patients care. We must remember that the computer is only an instrument to help in care and not a substitute of the nurse.

Palavras-chave : computer literacy; nursing informatics; communication; health manpower.
