Abstract

GOMEZ-ESPINOZA, Olman; GUERRERO-BARRANTES, Maritza; MENESES-MONTERO, Karla  and  NUNEZ-MONTERO, Kattia. Identification of a Microalgae Collection Isolated from Costa Rica by 18S rDNA Sequencing. Acta biol.Colomb. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.2, pp.199-204. ISSN 0120-548X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/abc.v23n2.68088.

Microalgae integrate a diverse polyphyletic group of photosynthetic microorganisms. Due to its biotechnological potential, studies to isolate and identify new strains have increased, hence, it is necessary to develop new techniques for their correct identification and classification. Using molecular biology tools, this study analyzed the 18S rDNA gene from 12 microalgal strains isolated from different regions of Costa Rica, resulting in six strains belonging to the class Trebouxiophyceae, three to Chlorophyceae, two to Prymnesiophyceae and one to Cyanidiophyceae. This study reports for the first time the molecular identification of microalgal strains isolated from Costa Rica, highlighting the diversity of these microorganisms in the country.

Keywords : microalgal biotechnology; molecular identification; phylogeny.
