Objective: To describe the quality of life in people with HIV/AIDS in Medellín, according the MOSSF-36 and the stories of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Materials and methods: Mixed in all subjects with HIV/AIDS belonging to a nongovernmental organization in Medellín. It describes the quality of life and its relationship with socio-demographic aspects through proportions, summary measures, U Mann Whitneys and Spearman correlation coefficients. Based on the symbolic interaction and Grounded theory, it described some of the meanings of quality of life from the perspective of the social actor. Results: According to the MOSSF-36 the group has good quality of life because, in most dimensions its scores were higher than the standard population's. The meanings of quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS are determined by macrocultural aspects such as housing, employment and food; microcultural one such as social and spiritual support, and individual as healthy habits. Conclusion: According to the MOSSF-36 people presented a good quality of life, yet the account of participants demonstrates the need to improve social support and spirituality or transcendence through increased self-efficacy, personal responsibility, self-help family support and social networks.
