Abstract

CARDONA ARANGO, Doris  and  PELAEZ, Enrique. Population aging in the twenty-first century: Opportunities, challenges and concerns. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2012, vol.28, n.2, pp.335-348. ISSN 0120-5552.

This discussion tries to show the challenges, opportunities, changes and concerns that an aging population, which requires a holistic view of the phenomenon from different perspectives. For this purpose, described the behaviour of the population changes for a century (1950-2050) in the world, in Latin America and the Caribbean and Colombia, highlighting the changes in demographic indicators. This thinking led to the conclusion that the opportunities, challenges and concerns posed by the aging population in the XXI century will be a factor in the development of peoples, they will face a decline in fertil-ity and increased life expectancy, causing changes in population structure, increasing demands on health services and economic systems and social security to meet increased demand with new family structures and intergenerational relations, but will increase the productive workforce potential contributors of the two systems.
