Abstract

URIBE VELASQUEZ, Sandra Patricia  and  LAGOUEYTE GOMEZ, María Isabel. The role of the nurse in the care of patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.1, pp.153-180. ISSN 0120-5552.

This article summarizes the study entitled "Efficacy of intramuscular diclofenac in the prevention of post Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Pancreatitis (ERCP),random clinical test double-blind exploratory", conducted at two Health Institutions in Medellin (Colombia) between 2010 and 2011 During this study we had the opportunity to verify the absence of a nurse during the ERCP procedure and the lack of protocols in endoscopy units. We present a broad illustration of the procedure, possible complications, endoscopic nursing history, and the role of the nurse in the attention of patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, specifying the functions to be performed by the nurse. A guide is then proposed with the steps to be followed by the nurse during each moment of the test, in order to provide quality care. We conclude about the necessity to train professionals in the nursing field in all aspects related to this test, given the importance to have the assistance of such professionals during the ERCP procedure.

Keywords : nursing care; endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP); complications; quality of health care.
