ESCOBAR-CORDOBA, Franklin; ALGARIN-CRESPO, Diógenes and CORDOBA NIETO, Karim. Hypnotics use during the positive airway pressure titration. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.2, pp.347-357. ISSN 0120-5552.
Objective: To establish some recommendations on the use of hypnotics during the PAP titration. Methods: Narrative review of the literature trough bibliographic search in the Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO Citation Index databases. Results: The effect of premedication with nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics and/or sedatives on the sleep parameters that affect the quality of the titration procedure have been evaluated for different publications and it has been demonstrated to be effective in promoting falling asleep, reduce sleep latency, increase total sleep time and improve sleep efficiency with minimal adverse effects next day, by the above are used frequently with excellent results, few adverse effects and according to the current legislation. Conclusion: Safety recommendations are established for sleep induction in patients undergoing titration of Positive Airway Pressure to support sleep laboratory staff before, during and after the use of oral hypnotics, providing security to the patient and avoiding preventable adverse outcomes.
