Resumen

DIAZ CARDENAS, Shyrley; MARTINEZ REDONDO, Mariam  y  ZAPATA TEHERAN, Ana María. Academic performance and quality of life related to health in dentistry students. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2017, vol.33, n.2, pp.139-151. ISSN 0120-5552.

Objective:

Associate academic performance and quality of life related to health (QLRH) in dentistry students, University of Cartagena.

Materials and methods:

Cross-sectional study in 347 students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Cartagena with prior informed consent. A self-study questionnaire was designed and applied to investigate sociodemographic variables, HRQOL (WHOQOL-BREF). The academic performance was obtained through the academic secretariat of the institution. Occurrences (prevalences) and associations between variables (odd ratios) were estimated with a confidence level of 95 %

Results:

35,2 % of the students presented low academic performance and the main reasons for loss of subjects were little time spent studying (20,1 %) and academic methodology used (13,8 %). According to the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, 37,7 % perceived to have a good HRQOL and felt pretty good about your health (52,2 %). We found an association between students with low academic performance and social domain involvement assessed by the WHOQOL-BREEF (OR =2,13, IC 95 %=1,12-4,06 p=0,02) and be a teenager (OR =1,7, IC 95 %=T04-3,05 p=0,03).

Conclusion:

We found an association between low academic performance and commitment to the social domain of students in relation to HRQOL and being a teenager. The university context must take a holistic view of the student's academic development in order to improve their quality of life.
