Objective:
Characterize the patient's safety environment in an Occupational Therapy service where teaching and care activities are developed for the National University of Colombia program.
Materials and methods:
Descriptive cross-sectional study, with application of the Survey on patient safety in health services (version for Colombia, adapted and in electronic format), to three occupational therapists who were linked during the years 2013 to 2015 in a site teaching assistant of the National University of Colombia. Consultation of reports and statistics of the service corresponding to the period of analysis.
Results:
Among the findings of the survey highlight underreporting of events, even though there is no punitive perception regarding their report; open communication is perceived, but improving feedback facing the errors; rotation and shortage of personnel; there is institutional support for the topic; and organizational learning and continuous improvement of the service are evaluated as positive.
Conclusions:
Overall, professionals value good the patient's safety environment in the service analyzed, but have to work on the key aspects that showed weaknesses in the analyzed categories, where is apparent lack of event registration and the consequent weakness in establishing corrective measures. In addition, it is important to capitalize on these experiences and processes on quality management and patient safety, articulating with the training and teaching activities that are also carried out there.
