Abstract
ARIAS-ROJAS, MAURICIO; CIFUENTES-TINJACA, CRISTIAN DAVID and CARRENO-MORENO, SONIA. Adaptation of the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale in Colombian Nursing Students. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2024, vol.40, n.2, pp.359-372. Epub Nov 14, 2024. ISSN 0120-5552. https://doi.org/10.14482/sun.40.02.741.654.
Objectives:
The objective of this study was to adapt and validate the Collett-Lester Fear of Death scale to the Colombian context in nursing students.
Materials and methods:
Psychometric study conducted during 2022. Content validity was developed with 13 experts who reviewed the clarity, comprehension, precision, relevance and coherence of the scale. Inter-judge agreement was calculated with the modified Lawshe index. The face validity process was conducted with 17 nursing students who evaluated the scale in terms of its comprehension, retrieval, judgment and appropriateness through a cognitive interview.
Results:
The 28 items of the scale had a CVI equal or higher than 0.85, 6 items had content adjustments, 20 items had semantic adjustments and 5 items remained the same. In the cognitive interview with the nursing students, it was determined that all 28 items of the scale had adequate recall, judgment and appropriateness, showing that it is valid in terms of content, phrasing and importance of the question. Only item 27 required adjustments in terms of comprehension.
Conclusions:
The Fear of Death Scale is an adapted and valid instrument for use with nursing students in Colombia. This tool is useful for use in educational and clinical contexts, as well as in research.
