Abstract

POLANCO IZQUIERDO, Mauricio. BOURGEOISNESS IN SÁNDOR MÁRAI. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2013, n.64, pp.115-133. ISSN 0120-5587.

From the perspective of the bourgeois writer, this paper relates the personality of the Hungarian writer, Sándor Márai, to his own literary production. Heir to the Central European tradition, he belonged to the fin de siècle generation which, such as Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig, tackled the social, political, but mainly cul-tural problems posed by the 20th century to Europe. This way, Márai's works reflect the agony of the ancient bourgeois values in the western hemisphere; his stateless, skeptical personality constitutes a testimony of its own impossibility to find a place in the postwar world.

Keywords : Bourgeoisness; Mitteleuropa; Magyar; Decadence; Otherness.
