Abstract
GUTIERREZ TRAPAGA, Daniel. "FAZME AVER MALA FIN": THE DEATH OF MERLIN IN THE BALADRO DEL SABIO MERLÍN FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ARS MORIENDI. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2015, n.67, pp.23-38. ISSN 0120-5587.
This paper studies the influence of the Castilian Ars moriendi in the episode of Merlin's death in the Baladro del sabio Merlín (Burgos, 1498). The Ars moriendi describes a soul-saving model of Christian death. On the contrary, in the Baladro Merlin died in such a fashion that he condemned himself to hell. Nonetheless, both the Ars and the Baladro are works with a similar didactic finality. Hence, the Baladro used for its main character, amongst other elements, the conducts described as damnatory in the Ars. In this way, the romance established the diabolic characterisation of its main character explicitly.
Keywords : Merlin; death; damnation; Ars moriendi.
