FERNANDEZ MARTIN, Patricia. WHAT SANCHO GOT TO MEAN AND THEN RETURNED TO BELIEVE: A DIACHRONIC STUDY ON PERIPHRASES WITH MOTION VERBS IN DON QUIXOTE. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2015, n.67, pp.141-162. ISSN 0120-5587.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the diachronic evolution of five Spanish verbal periphrases (ir (a) + infinitive, ir + gerund; venir a + infinitive, venir + gerund and volver/tornar a + infinitive), using as main text Don Quixote of La Mancha. After providing a concept of periphrasis useful to study a stadium of language different from ours, we analyze the periphrases in Cervantes' text, taking always into account how they work in Middle Age and Modern Spanish. The main conclusion leads us to consider Don Quixote as a linguistic bridge between the medieval Spanish and the current one, as far as the periphrases are concerned.

Palavras-chave : Don Quixote; verbal periphrasis; motion verbs; historical grammar.
