Abstract

CARDONA Z, Patricia. COLOMBIAN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY: THREE VERSIONS AND THE SAME TRADITION, 1827-1842. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2017, n.71, pp.69-88. ISSN 0120-5587.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n71a04.

Based on a methodology that contrasts book publishing, this article aims to study the knowledge of national geography in Colombia based on versions established from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. More than being objective knowledge, the nation’s geography constituted a crucible of several discourses which were still intertwined; they were part of the literary genre and of techniques comprised by rhetoric, and they were not part of an autonomous scientific discipline having its own procedures and instruments. Instead, it was a mixture of narrations of voyages, descriptions, and historical data and information whose purpose was to increase citizens’ fervor and provide a common representation of the territory of people who were accustomed to learning more by hearing than by seeing.

Keywords : book publishing; popular books; national geography; rhetoric; re-figuration; historiography..
