Abstract
PINEDA CUPA, Miguel Ángel. JORGE ROA AND THE LIBRERÍA NUEVA: BACKGROUND AND ESSENTIAL ASPECTS REGARDING COLOMBIAN PUBLISHERS AT THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2017, n.71, pp.109-130. ISSN 0120-5587. https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n71a06.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the main aspects that characterized literary text publishers in Colombia at the end of the 19th century. This analysis is divided in three parts. First, it is important to see a Publisher-Bookseller as an occupation with a historical cultural background which at the end of the century was considered a figure whose main intention was to renew and update national discourses. Second, it is necessary to conduct a formal analysis of the publishing elements which identified the publishing collection devised by Jorge Roa in 1893, named The People’s Library (Biblioteca Popular). Finally, it is necessary to understand the phenomenon of bookshops in Bogota in the late 19th century, which allowed the consolidation of the occupation and its future “professionalization”. Thus, the aim is to offer a historical look at a profession which has been addressed little or nothing in local social studies. Furthermore, this article proposes a new path to interpret and explore the history of publishing and written communication in Colombia.
