Abstract

RAMIREZ JARAMILLO, John Fredy. ÁNGEL CUERVO: CURIOSITIES OF THE AMERICAN LIFE IN PARIS OR IN DEFENSE OF THE LATIN AMERICAN IDENTITY. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2019, n.75, pp.15-37. ISSN 0120-5587.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n75a01.

This paper studies how Ángel Cuervo, a nineteenth-century Colombian intellectual, presents the defense of the Latin American identity in his book Curiosidades de la vida americana en París. It will be demonstrated that this protection not only corresponds to a criticism of the Europeans that undervalue the nations and inhabitants of South America without establishing nuances of any kind, but also calls attention to the wealthy Latin American immigrants that, disowning their own culture and idiosyncrasy, try to emulate the lifestyle of the European aristocracy.

Keywords : Ángel Cuervo; Curiosidades de la vida americana en París; Latin American identity; Nation; rastaquouère.
