This review article will conceptualize verbal metaphor as the creation of unknown meanings, relying on a broad tradition of studies that privilege its epistemic function. A panorama of the studies made from philosophical, semiotic and psycholinguistic models will be presented to derive the conceptual differences. This review allowed establishing if the understanding of the metaphor can be explained by the establishment of comparisons between existing ideas. The approaches that highlight its epistemic function question the still existing positions that associate it with the production of beautiful expressions and that reduce it to a simple ornamentation.
