Abstract

LANCHEROS REDONDO, Hugo Fernando. ON APPARENT IMPOLITENESS. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2020, n.78, pp.189-214.  Epub Nov 11, 2021. ISSN 0120-5587.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n78a08.

The aim of this study is to define apparent impoliteness and explain its working. For that purpose, a literature review about the topic was carried out. An analysis of the use of the apparent (im)politeness in two samples of an online chat and in a face-to-face conversation was also carried out. On the basis of an impoliteness’ conception as a continuum between totally polite and totally impolite behaviour, apparent impoliteness can be defined as the conventionally impolite acts that are not working as expected in a specific situation and create a neutral or polite effect on the other’s face.

Keywords : face; facework; (im)politeness; apparent impoliteness; dysphemism.
