From the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper examines the response by El Colombiano towards the abstention phenomenon that occurred during the election of the National Constituent Assembly representatives of the Constitution of Colombia in 1991. For this, the reviewing of two basic levels (contextual and linguistic) of CDA for journalistic speech, it was possible to identify the newspaper in favor of government, as well as its aim to simulate impartiality. This paper is a contribution to the analysis of mainstream journalistic narratives in Colombia, which are understudied for the most part.
