GUARIN BUITRAGO, Daniel. ANDRÉS HURTADO AND THE FAILED HERO’S JOURNEY IN PÍO BAROJA’S THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE (1911). Linguist.lit. [online]. 2021, n.80, pp.35-53.  Epub 06-Dez-2022. ISSN 0120-5587.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n80a03.

In this article, a reading of The Tree of Knowledge (1911) by Pío Baroja is presented as a classic hero’s journey. This research paper sketches the evolution of Andrés Hurtado as a heroic character; identifies the archetypes in the novel’s characters and analyzes the twelve phases of the hero’s journey. Such a reading is possible, since the archetypes and stages of the hero’s journey are clearly identifiable; yet still, Hurtado, despite fulfilling the characteristics of the hero archetype and making his journey, could be considered a failed hero, since he commits suicide before the end of his adventure.

Palavras-chave : The Tree of Knowledge (1911); hero’s journey; Pío Baroja; archetypes; failed hero.
