Resumen

CASANOVA GARCIA, Fernando; HENAO SALDARRIAGA, Duván  y  FRANCO ARENAS, Fernando. Dimentional control of the welding process using vibratory stress relief. Ing. Investig. [online]. 2008, vol.28, n.1, pp.22-25. ISSN 0120-5609.

In this research the effectiveness of the application of vibratory stress relief processes on the control of the deformations due to internal stresses on plates produced by the welding process was evaluated. The distortion magnitude suffered by three groups of specimens which were treated with vibration during and after the welding process. The specimens consisted of austenitic stainless steel plates, which has high tendency to be deformed due to a high expansion and shrinkage coefficient and a low thermal conductivity during arc welding process. The deformation was quantified by measuring the vertical distance that the end of the plate moved after the welding bead was applied. The magnitude of stresses generated by the effect of the vibration process was measured too. Results showed a clear reduction of the final deformation in specimens treated compared to the non-treated ones. It was also found that the stress magnitude generated during the vibration process did not have an important effect on the effectiveness of the treatment.

Palabras clave : residual stress; vibratory stress relief; deformation; arc welding.
