Abstract

PENARANDA CONTRERAS, Oscar Iván; PERILLA PERILLA, Jairo Ernesto  and  ALGECIRA ENCISO, Néstor Ariel. A review of using organic acids to chemically modify starch. Ing. Investig. [online]. 2008, vol.28, n.3, pp.47-52. ISSN 0120-5609.

Obtaining a biodegradable material from the reaction of starch with organic acids has great interest because it would lead to producing new materials having chemical and physical properties which can be widely used in the fine chemicals, cosmetics and food industries. Modified starch thus has biodegradable properties which would help to reduce the amount of polluting solid waste. This paper gives a summary of some studies regarding modifying starch with organic acids and its applications in the field of chemical industry.

Keywords : starch; biopolymer; organic acid; chemical modification; esterification.
