LOPEZ-JARAMILLO, Patricio; RINCON, Andrés  e  MATEUS, Catalina. Health research in Santander: analysis of the last 10 years. Rev. Col. Cardiol. [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.8, pp.366-388. ISSN 0120-5633.

The aim of this article was to study the development of the health research in the Department of Santander during the last 10 years. The analysis time was divided in two periods: the first one from January 1995 to December 1999 and the second one from January 2000 to December 2004. Two variables were analyzed: number of projects financed by Colciencias and number of articles in journals indexed to PUBMED, in which at least one of the filial institutions belonged to Bucaramanga. Five projects were financed during the first 5 years and 19 articles were published. During the 2000-2004 period, 56 projects were financed and 73 articles were published. The institutions that contributed with more projects and publications were UIS, FCV, ICIB and UNAB. It is worth to emphasize that 70% of the publications are collaborative work between institutions making part of ICIB with support of collaborating foreign institutions. Also, there was an equal participation from the public and private sectors in this huge increment of health research, something unusual in a developing country. Based in projects that are now in course it is expected that the accelerated growth in health research in Santander may be maintained during the next years.
