Abstract

VANEGAS, Adriana L  and  JARAMILLO, Nicolás. Intolerance to statins: a challenge in clinical practice. Rev. Col. Cardiol. [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.2, pp.75-83. ISSN 0120-5633.

Statins are hypolipemic medicaments that have shown to be essential and safe in the management of dyslipidemia and as secondary prevention in patients at high cardiovascular risk. Nevertheless, in some occasions its use is limited by the development of intolerance and toxicity in some patients because of individual response, pharmacological interactions or comorbidities, or failure in reaching non-HDL cholesterol goals in patients with mixed dyslipidemia that obliges the clinician to turn to strategies oriented to diminish risks and get similar benefits. The aim of this review is to provide tools in the decision-making during the treatment of these difficult to manage patients.

Keywords : statins; high cardiovascular risk; intolerance; toxicity; treatment options.
