Abstract

SANCHEZ, Fabio et al. Prevalence and behaviour of risk factors in metabolic syndrome according to different age intervals, in a female cohort of the area of influence of the Clínica de las Américas in Medellín, Colombia. Rev. Col. Cardiol. [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.3, pp.102-110. ISSN 0120-5633.

Background: metabolic syndrome is a high impact epidemiologic entity made up of elements with a common substrate that is insulin resistance which is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Objectives: to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and describe the behaviour of its components in the different stages of female life, according to the National Cholesterol Education Program and Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) and the world International Diabetes Federation consensus (IDF) 2005. Design and Methods: descriptive transversal cut trial. 271 female volunteers were included, and divided in three age groups (< 40, between 40 and 64 and > 65 years) that had clinical and laboratory evaluation to determine the risk factors prevalence that constitute the metabolic syndrome according to the described classifications. Results: metabolic syndrome prevalence was bigger when applying the IDF definition and significant superior in those older than 65 years in the two classifications compared to those younger than 40 years. In women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome the number of risk factors increased with age when applying the ATP III criteria. Conclusions: metabolic syndrome in women is a multifactorial manifestation in which age and menopausal state are important predisposing factors. The outcomes are applicable to middle and mid-high socioeconomic classes of the city anad are similar to the findings described by other authors.
