Sudden cardiac death is a devastating consequence of structural heart disease and a global public health problem, accounting for close to 50% of cardiovascular deaths. Its incidence is greater in people over the age of 40, with the most important risk factors being: established ischemic heart disease or ischemia during the acute phase of a myocardial infarction. However, there are other factors, unrelated to ischemia, such as dilated, hypertrophic, or valvular cardiomyopathy. Ventricular fibrillation and tachycardia are the most frequent causes of sudden cardiac death in adults. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are widely used and recommended by cardiology societies for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death.
