JARAMILLO, Beatriz; CALDERON, Jorge Andrés  e  CASTANO, Juan Guillermo. Electrochemical assessment of weathering steels under simulated laboratory conditions. Rev.fac.ing.univ. Antioquia [online]. 2006, n.37, pp.200-210. ISSN 0120-6230.

In the last decades weathering steels have became important structural materials in the construction of civil works due to their low rate of corrosion when exposed to urban and industrial atmospheres. The excellent anticorrosive properties of the weathering steels have been attributed to the nature and structure of the rust formed on the material surfaces when certain favorable conditions are present. In this work a study of the characteristics of the rust initially formed on weathering steels is presented. The study was performed on weathering steels of different nature and different surface conditions: nude, pre-rusted and galvanized, and exposed to conditions that simulate urban and industrial atmospheres. The analysis was carried out by means of electrochemical techniques, such as evaluation of the open-circuit potential and electrochemical impedance during the first two months of exposure.

Palavras-chave : weathering steels; atmospheric corrosion; electrochemical impedance; electrode potential.
