Abstract

CUBILLOS, Jairo; MONTILLA, Iván  and  MONTES DE CORREA, Consuelo. Separation of the Jacobsen’s catalyst in the enantioselective epoxidation of cis-ethyl cinnamate under homogeneous conditions. Rev.fac.ing.univ. Antioquia [online]. 2009, n.47, pp.9-19. ISSN 0120-6230.

In this work, we report on a new methodology for the recovery and reutilization of the Jacobsen’s catalyst in the enantioselective epoxidation of cis-ethyl cinnamate under homogeneous conditions. The un-immobilized catalyst could be recovered by using in situ generated dimethyldioxirane as oxidizing agent. Although, catalytic activity results were lower than those reached with NaOCl in homogeneous phase, in the present method the catalytic productivity can be improved by reutilization of the recovered catalyst. After catalyst reusing for three times a slight reduction of initial catalytic activity is observed. FT-IR analyses suggest Mn demetalization rather tan catalyst oxidative degradation. Also, the physical loss of the catalyst during its recovery is not discarded.

Keywords : cis-ethyl cinnamate; optically active epoxides; enantioselective catalysis; Jacobsen’s catalyst; dimethyldioxirane; reutilization.
