MONTOYA, Carolina et al. Methodological proposal for locating water quality monitoring stations in distribution networks using geographic information systems. Rev.fac.ing.univ. Antioquia [online]. 2009, n.49, pp.129-140. ISSN 0120-6230.

The redefinition of the monitoring program for the control and surveillance of drinking water quality in the distribution system of the city of Cali (Colombia) included the location of monitoring stations using a Geographic Information System (GIS). The integration of different kinds of information allowed the establishment of priority areas for locating these stations in accordance with existing national legislation. With the methodology developed in this study and in accordance with the percentage of population served, the location of 72 stations distributed in the 4 subsystems was recommended: 1 station in the network Pance, 3 in the network Reforma, 12 in the network Alta and 56 in the network Baja. This methodology can be applied in any water distribution system, subject to the availability of the required information, which shows the importance of proper documentation of all procedures associated with the production and distribution of water for human consumption as considered in the Water Safety Plans (WSP). The results of this study represent a breakthrough in the building of risk maps of the water supply systems.
