Abstract
BRAVO, Juan-José and OREJUELA, ZUZET MENDUINA, Juan Pablo. Approximation to the measurement of Backorder impact in flexible manufacturing systems. Rev.fac.ing.univ. Antioquia [online]. 2012, n.65, pp.99-111. ISSN 0120-6230.
This paper studies the implications of considering or not backorders in models of planning, controlling and configuration of production in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS).Many of the models that attempt to study FMS do not consider backorders; and those that do consider it, include it as a passive variable where it is not explicitly noted the potential impact on those systems and especially on their relationship with the demand pattern. In this study, it has been identified direct benefits of including backorders in capacity utilization, in balancing workload among machine groups (cells), and in inventory levels. Finally, it is proposed the use of the economic concept of elasticity to measure the real impact between backorders and other production factors; which is an innovative strategy in this kind of applications and can be subject of future investigations.
