Abstract

FLOREZ S, Elkin G.; CARDONA F, Salvador  and  JORDI N, Lluisa. Assessment of severity of a fiat at the rolling surface of the railway wheel. Rev.fac.ing.univ. Antioquia [online]. 2012, n.65, pp.180-190. ISSN 0120-6230.

The presence of flat, even though incipient, at the rolling surface causes rapid deterioration of wheel-rail contact with the consequences that this entails for both the environment and for the rolling stock. Therefore the detection of these flats, before they become dangerous, are important as study material. This paper presents some of the results of an extensive measurement task carried out in a line of the Ferrocarril Metropolitano de Barcelona. The rail vibration generated by wheels passage is detected using an accelerometer located at the foot of the rail and their exact moment of passage on section where the accelerometer is located is determined by the shear strain of the soul of the rail. Are proposed, and applied to experimental records, different indicators to quantify the flat severity. One of the issues discussed from the experimental data is the variation of the peak energy of the vibration detected according to the distance between the section where the flat struck with the rail and the accelerometer. This peak should be normalized to set up correctly the severity of the flat.

Keywords : Rail wheel flat; vibration analysis; rail transportation.
