Abstract

MESA CALLEJAS, Ramón Javier  and  GOMEZ OSPINA, Mónica Alexandra. Analysis and perspectives of monetary reformation in Venezuela (bolivar fuerte): impact on Colombia. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.21, pp.11-26. ISSN 0120-6346.

This article shows some reflections on monetary restructuring process in Venezuela since Strong Bolivar was introduced on January 1, 2008. The article is intended to discuss about perspective of Venezuelan reform and its impact on Colombia within a complex macroeconomic context characterized by its evident high levels of inflation in Venezuela. Discussion is based on a study of experiences from other counties going through similar processes and on the analysis of costs and benefits of monetary restructuring. Impacts on Colombian will depend on the real possibilities this monetary reform can have to reduce inflation, case in which devaluation pressures of Strong Bolivar can be stopped, thus minimizing the negative effect it would have on Colombian exports.

Keywords : Venezuela; monetary reform; monetary policy; inflation; monetary systems; foreign exchange.
