Abstract

ARBOLEDA ALVAREZ, Olga Lucía; GHISO COTOS, Alfredo Manuel  and  QUIROZ LIZARAZO, Elkin Horacio. Social capital: a review of the concept and a proposal for its re-elaboration. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.21, pp.75-90. ISSN 0120-6346.

This article is intended to make an approach to the re-elaboration of social capital concept. For such a purpose, a review of both authors and trends involved has been made. This review shows an evidence of the unclear nature of the concept and the lack of consistent perceptions going beyond economical parameters for establishing explanatory and comprehensive relationships consistent with generation and strengthening of democratic processes. Three ideas in relation to the theoretical proposals can be distinguished: total opposition, total acceptance, and criticism. This latter re-elaborates the concept, showing it at the service of civil organization processes, a social capital which contributes to inclusion and social control before The State and favors democratic participation processes. The result is the recreation of the theoretical base, which reads the social capital from four constitutive dimensions: socio-cultural trajectory, social responsibility, association and human development.

Keywords : Social responsibility; relation of economics to social values; human development; association.
