Abstract

CAMPO ROBLEDO, Jacobo  and  OLIVARES, Wilmer. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CO2 EMISSIONS, ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND GDP: THE CASE OF THE CIVETS. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2013, vol.16, n.33, pp.45-66. ISSN 0120-6346.

This paper evaluates the existent relation between CO2 emissions (Carbon Dioxide), energy consumption and GDP for the group of countries known as CIVETS (Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa), in the period 1985-2007. To prove these relations, a stationary data panel methodology is used supported by unitary root and cointegration tests. It is concluded that in the long term, economic growth and energy consumption are critical in explaining global warming through increases in CO2 emissions for CIVETS. Finally, empiric evidence is presented that proves the existence of a Kuznets Environmental Curve for the group of countries studied, which can prove that increases in the per capita GDP increase the CO2 emissions, but after the GDP reaches a certain level emissions decrease.

Keywords : Environmental economy; CO2 emissions; cointegration panel; CIVETS.
