Abstract

PINILLA-RIVERA, Maribel; DIAZ-RODRIGUEZ, Carlos  and  SANCHEZ-BUENDIA, Edgar Emilio. ECONOMIC GROWTH AND CO2 EMISSIONS IN LATIN AMERICA, 1990-2015. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.49, pp.41-55. ISSN 0120-6346.  https://doi.org/10.22395/seec.v21n49a2.

This article studies the relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay from 1990 to 2015. Using the cointegration panel technique, it was found that 70% of the countries analyzed -including the consolidated region- do not meet the Environmental Kuznets Curve. In the cases of Uruguay and Colombia, the Environmental Kuznets Curve is met due to the reduction of long-term income elasticities with respect to short-term income elasticities. However, the error correction mechanism for the Colombian case is not statistically significant because the relationship between emissions and economic growth may be divergent in the long term.
