PELAEZ HIGUERA, Johanna; CALDERON HERNANDEZ, Gregorio e SERNA GOMEZ, Héctor Mauricio. SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACTS OF STREET VENDING: A REVIEW BASED ON EMPIRICAL RESEARCH IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2023, vol.26, n.60, a4444. Epub 10-Nov-2023. ISSN 0120-6346. https://doi.org/10.22395/seec.v26n60a4444.
This literature review aims to understand the social and economic impact of street vending from a gender perspective, economic and financial characteristics of street vendors, and educational and training conditions of the population engaged in this activity, based on empirical research available on Scopus. Methodologically, three stages were followed: a scoping review on street vending, a systematic review based on the previous stage, and an in-depth analysis identifying the most relevant articles related to the three selected categories of analysis. Findings highlight the role of women in street vending and the existence of factors affecting their activity, such as social mobility, discrimination, harassment, and the balance between paid and unpaid work. Additionally, limitations in the development of street vending are evidenced, such as access to the financial system, harassment and enforcement by local authorities, and restrictions on periodical income, as well as limitations in education and training.
