Abstract

ANGULO-CAMARGO, Milton Fernando; SANDOVAL GARRIDO, Luis Eduardo  and  YANES GUERRA, Carlos Andrés. CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTOMOBILE DEMAND IN BOGOTÁ. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2025, vol.28, n.65, a4987.  Epub Oct 27, 2025. ISSN 0120-6346.  https://doi.org/10.22395/seec.v28n65a4987.

This paper characterizes the relationship between sociodemographic variables and the demand for automobiles in households in Bogotá, as well as their impact on mobility, understood as daily commuting (home-work, and home-university, among others). The aim is to determine whether there are ties between the sociodemographic conditions of households and the demand for automobiles. The 2021 Multipurpose Survey for Bogota (EMB) provided by Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística-DANE (National Administrative Department of Statistics) was used. The concepts of random utility developed by McFadden (1974) were applied, performing different probabilistic estimations (probit) between the sociodemographic variables and the demand for automobiles. The results obtained from the estimations show that having a lower education level, being married or in a common-law union, and owning a house have an impact on an increase in the probability of demanding a car. Finally, this study concludes that lower-income strata of the population decide to demand a vehicle as an alternative source of income in their households.
