TOBON, MARÍA XIMENA  e  RODRIGUEZ, GERZAÍN. Chilblains: a mysterious disease. CES Med. [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.1, pp.113-126. ISSN 0120-8705.

Chilblains can be found in Colombia in the area of Bogota and its surroundings, it is an uncommon disease that occurs as an abnormal vascular response to cold weather, caused by a prolonged vasoconstriction that develops into hipoxemia and inflammation of vascular walls. This disease affects acral zones like hands and feet. It presents as erythematous or bluish macules, papules, plaques or nodules resting on an edematous base, which tend to be symmetrical and bilateral and can be multiple or unique; they can develop blisters and ulcers with no systemic symptoms. It is more frequent in women between 15 to 30 years old and children. It can be divided into idiopathic chilblains and secondary to systemic diseases. The main histopathological feature is papillary edema and a lymphocytic perivascular and perieccrine infiltrate. Chilblains are diagnosed by the clinical features and complementary studies can be useful to exclude other disorders. First line treatment involves preventive measures and nifedipine. We make a revision of the literature making emphasis on patients seen in Centro Dermatologico Federico Lleras Acosta in Bogota (Colombia).
