Clostridium species are anaerobic, spore, forming gram-positive bacteria that are widely spread in the environment. Clostridium perfringens infections in neonates are extremely rare. Severe anaerobic sepsis, including septic shock, is an unusual clinical event in this group of patients. We highlight two cases of C. perfringens bacteremia associated with fulminant septic shock in neonates with severe necrotizing enterocolitis.
