Abstract

REYES BOTERO, Germán  and  SANTIAGO URIBE, Carlos. Refractory epilepsy. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2010, vol.26, n.1, pp.34-46. ISSN 0120-8748.

SUMMARY Drug resistant epilepsy is a very frequent condition seen at our neurological clinics. Despite of the antiepileptic drugs about 30% of patients suffering from epilepsy will continue having seizures even if they are in combined schemes. The definition of pharmacoresistant epilepsy is subject of current controversy between research groups. However, the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) has published recently a new consensus proposal defining drug resistant epilepsy. This new definition permits to select the group of patients that could be candidates to surgery. The aim of this review is to guide the neurologist in the selection of patients suffering from drug resistant epilepsy and to describe the main diagnosis procedures needs as preoperative assessment.

Keywords : Antiepileptic drugs; drug-resistant epilepsy; epilepsy surgery; refractory epilepsy; temporal-lobe epilepsy; untreatable epilepsy.
