RESTREPO, Francia et al. P300-wave modulation in a group of Colombian children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.3, pp.146-153. ISSN 0120-8748.
Introduction: various biological markers have been proposed as a signature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), one of the most prevalent developmental disorders in children. We present a study of cognitive event-related potentials in a group of children with ADHD. Objective: to study the P300 component of the cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) in a group of Colombian patients with attention-dencit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Materials and methods: 30 patients and the same number of sex and age-matched control subjects performed an auditory and a visual selective-attention task according to the oddball paradigm. ERPs were acquired from the electrodes Fz, Cz and Pz and the measures of the amplitude and latency of the P300 component were obtained. The data were compared with the student T-test and Mann-Whitney test. Results: ADHD patients showed a delay in the P300 latency and a reduction in the N2-P3 amplitude. All the differences were statistically significant (p<0.05), except for the Fz amplitud during the visual task. Conclusions: the alterations in the latency and amplitude of the P300 wave in the group of patients could reflect certain changes in the brain modulation of visual and auditory information.
