GONZALEZ M, Guillermo; AMAYA V, Efrain y VARGAS P, Nicolas. Clinical features, complications and outcome of patients with encephalitis in hospital universitario Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo - june to november of 2013. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2014, vol.30, n.3, pp.163-168. ISSN 0120-8748.
Introduction: Encephalitis in our area have virtually unknown prevalence and incidence, although they are important due to the morbidity and mortality that may eventually cause. Objective: To determine the local epidemiology of encephalitis, to provide evidence to physicians who work in similar areas on the clinical features, complications and sequelae of this disease. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive and prospective study was performed at the Hospital Hernando Universitario Moncaleano Perdomo. Patients were those with established diagnosis of encephalitis by a neurologist, from June to November 2013. We proceeded to the review medical records of the patient and follow-up until discharge from the institution. Data analysis was done using Microsoft Excel 2013. Results: During the follow-up period, 7 cases of encephalitis were diagnosed, the average age being 35.5. Acute dengue serology in the patients was: Ns1: 3 and IgM: 4; the patients considered were enrolled with encephalitis dengue, there was no change in the CT image, LCR show mild lymphocytic pleocytosis with normal glucose and slightly elevated protein. Also on 5 patients PCR were negative for other pathogens. The management of all patients was symptomatic, showed a good clinical outcome, there was no re-entry or mortalilty. Conclusions: The main etiologic agent of encephalitis in HUHMP was the dengue virus, this being a very important factor to take into account in endemic areas. This is why we recommend applying serological studies for dengue virus ( Ns1, IgM and IgG), and thus confirm or rule out the involvement of the CNS by itself.
