The term dyskinesia was originally coined to design any form of hyperkinetic movement disorder emerging in the context of treatment with dopamine blocking agents, but it is a vague term and nowadays is prefer to define in the most precise manner the predominant phenomenology of the movement disorder. Splitting the concept of dyskinesia in this way will provide the clinician not only a solid classification scheme but also with optimised strategies in terms of treatment.
