Resumen

VASQUEZ BUILES, Santiago  y  AGUIRRE, Hernán Darío. Experience of a specialized neuroscience institution during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2021, vol.37, n.1, pp.7-11.  Epub 08-Mayo-2021. ISSN 0120-8748.  https://doi.org/10.22379/24224022355.

INTRODUCTION:

As of December 2019, a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), began to spread rapidly throughout China, and is currently a global pandemic with cases reported in more than 192 countries. The first case of COVID-19 in the city of Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, was reported at the beginning of March 2020, with a massive increase in the number of cases in the following months, which is why multiple local institutions had to create protocols to care for patients with suspected or diagnosed COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES:

Document the experiences and logistical adaptations of a center specialized in neurosciences for the care of the Sars-Cov2 pandemic

METHODS:

Descriptive, narrative, retrospective study

RESULTS:

The Neurological Institute of Colombia (Indec), despite being a neuroscience institution, adapted all its services in a functional and structural way to support the hospital network of the department of Antioquia.

CONCLUSIONS:

This manuscript provides a comprehensive guidance for other neurology institutions, in terms of preparing for an influx of patients with suspected or diagnosed COVID-19 into their hospital system.
