MENESES-GOMEZ, Edwin; VIVARES-BUILES, Annie  and  BOTERO-BOTERO, Alejandro. Condición del primer molar permanente en una población de escolares de la ciudad de Medellín 2012. CES odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.1, pp.24-32. ISSN 0120-971X.

Introduction and objective: The first permanent molars are very important dental structures in cerebral and maxillofacial growth and development, and overall and in the oral health status. The aim of this study was to conduct an exploratory analysis about the condition of the first permanent molars and their relationship with their sociodemographic characteristics in a schoolchildren population that belong to the Social Project of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Autonomous University of the Americas in 2012. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was realized on 224 students. DMTF index (DMTFT) was performed to fine out the dental caries prevalence and experience in the first permanent molars, also statistical analysis with univariate and bivariate test (Chi-square) were done, and the results are presented in mean (SD) absolute and relative mean frequencies. Results: 79.8% had no dental caries-affected molar, 11.4% had one of four diseased molars, 5.7% had two affected molars, 1.6% and 1.6% had three four molars were affected. It was an exploratory analysis that compared the state of the first molar with sociodemographic variables and found no statistically significant differences. But we found a trend for higher number of affected molars in the subsidized and socioeconomic status one and two. The most prevalent treatment needs were the preventive and restoration of one surface. Conclusions: This study reflects inequalities of caries distribution associated with social determinants of health. In relation to biological and local determinants or risk factors, we described the variations of: the eruption chronology, morphology and the immature state at the enamel at the time of the teeth are espoused to the mouth environment.
